New Wine in Old Bottles: An Antiquarian’s Indiana Jones

Dr Trevor Hay, formerly University of Melbourne. Scholar of comparative and intercultural literature, specialising in Chinese theatre, literature and folklore and in English language writing on China. He is a collector of antiquarian books about China, Central Asia and Tibet and has travelled and worked intermittently in China over fifty years. He is a fluent speaker of Modern Standard Mandarin and has written twelve books on China.
His collection of antiquarian books on China; Central Asia and Tibet (and possibly his China ‘curios’); His own writings drawing on old books to create new stories. In particular he will discuss three of his recent books:
A Dream of Tartary; The Man Who Loved Dragons and The Library of Lost Horizons: An Antiquarian Voyage
The case of Indiana Jones, and the way the fictional movie character may have been inspired by three real explorer-archaeologists of the 1920s who, and he intends to convince you, were much more interesting.
